The Immortal Traveller

  • NB: As some of you know, I have a fantasy short story collection about an immortal… that I don’t share with just anyone, at least not yet… Maybe one day. Well a friend of mine is writing a novel and in her novel is a character who witnessed the end of his own world and then floated in space before finding another planet.

She asked me to write a poem about this characters experience so that she could use as a reference. Since she had never dealt with an immortal character before, she had no idea where to begin with building him up. So this is what I wrote for her.

    The Immortal Traveller

    Standing alone
    Everyone gone
    The world known faded
    With the hourglass straining

    Feeling so lost
    Afraid, confused
    Questioning memories…
    Decisions that were made…

    Missing friends…
    Wishing to smile again,
    To laugh like the past,
And just to sleep in peace…

    Then as time slowly ends
    And the fires slowly creep
With a head to the hands
    Tears stain the dusty land

    An eternity granted
Yet it was not long enough,
For there are only thoughts of regret
As the world crumbles to darkness…

    Then nothingness…
    Darkness and distant lights,
    Only time now for reflection
Acceptance of what has been and gone.

    The unknown consumes now,
    But with a lingering hope…
    And with hope is salvation
From the war within ones self.

    Then a miracle beyond comprehension,
As that hope comes to fruition,
Just as creating life is miraculous,
So is finding and discovering it too

    Looking down upon this miracle…
The regrets of the past seem so small
For in the timeline of the universe,
They were nothing more than a tear drop

Descending… from the heavens so vast and infinite
To a lowly so confined world…
But one of life and with a future
At least till the repetition of time once more.
