What I’m proud of (Autism — Poem)

  • Yesterday I had a conversation with someone about autism and pride. This person seemed to think that I should be proud to be Autistic… I thought about this a lot, really deeply actually, for some reason… at least for myself, it seemed wrong to be proud of that.

Of course that made me think… what am I proud of… Well-

I am proud of the obstacles I face and overcome… proud of the adventures I have… proud of being a human, proud of being in this world… proud to be here … proud to be me!

Sure… Autism is part of me, but I don’t think its something to be proud of … what I do despite the hindrance of Autism though, that is. But that’s just an obstacle.  Disabilities to me, for me… they are not medals or achievement’s… just things that are what they are, things that make me different… things that I must work though. — I hope this makes sense.

I agree with you Matty 🙂 And I’m proud of you because you took a comment and turned it into something with real meaning. No-one would be proud of their challenges or disabilities but many are rightly proud of the way they live with them and the person they are despite those difficulties. Thank you again Matty for sharing and making us think. Love and hugs Vanessa

  • I’m proud that you are proud! Like I always say Matty, you never cease to amaze me with all your talents. But the best part of you that I’m really proud of is your heart and your ability to care and forgive others. You are truly splendiferous!

    Love you!
    *hugs* Amy
