My name is Matty (poem)

  • NB: Book ready in next few weeks. I wrote this poem cause I am thinking lots about something

    My Name is Matty

    My name is Matty
    And I am a bit weird…
I have this thing called Autism,
And it really makes no sense.

Its like my brain is always full
    Every sound, color, light, smell
I see and feel it all,
    In one big ball.

I don’t always look people in eyes when they talk,
    I do try…
My friend told me once to stare at their noses
It makes people less grumpy you know.

    The words “You’re not trying”
    Those hurt the most
    I try with everything
    Just sometimes it doesn’t show.

    Inclusion makes me happy
    And makes me feel great.
I may not wish or be able to go to your party
But being invited is so, so great.

I really love people too, you know
Though I am mostly on my own…
I get lonely just like you…
Even if I look lost in my world.

I guess what I’m trying to say
Is I am Matty and I am weird,
I have this thing called Autism,
And it really makes no sense

But even though I am a bit different
And sometimes I can be frustrating to deal with…
I am still kind of the same…
    So please don’t forget.

    Love Matty

    You rock Matty πŸ™‚

  • I’ll never forget, Matty! Your words have helped me see into & understand the the worlds of some of the 4-5 year olds that I teach whose autism is just being brought to light. It is lonely and confusing, and yes, you’re different and sometimes weird, but like I tell My Littles, “Who isn’t?!” You are also a person, with a kind and loving heart who loves people. You just know when you need to be alone, and that’s okay. In my class I always say “When you’re ready to join us, come on over! We’re always here, ready for you to play with us!”ðŸ’‒ You’re awesome, Matty!
