My full statement on the 1m ad campaign for care workers

  • A small part of my statement on the 1m ad campaign that was aimed at bringing care workers into the industry was used in this article below is my full statement.

I believe the advertisement campaign is a good thing, more care workers is a positive for both the industry and the people receiving care.

However a campaign bringing people into a broken system will just have them burn out and leave. Throwing more people to replace the ones leaving will not be sustainable when they eventually run out of people. I also wonder what training these people applying are given if any. From what I understand care workers are being thrown into situations where they don’t know what to do and the only support for some is a call center in Auckland.

I have care workers on my team already doing the work of coordinators and not being paid for it, again cause they can’t get through to anyone and if they do it often is not followed up. It will just cause more to leave.

And that is just the tip of the ice berg when you start looking deeper at the issues clients and care workers have right now. Some of these stories are mentioned in the petition but a lot more than that. We are told complaints have doubled. I think these are things beyond what an advertisement campaign can solve.
