Feathers – Not a Duck!

  • NB: I think we have all felt this way before.

    Feathers – Not a Duck!

    In a land
    Not so far away
    A land called Ducktopia
Where ducks like to live and play

    There was a duck
    Who wasn’t a duck,
A duck who wasn’t a duck at all
    The not-duck’s name was Feathers
    And Feathers was a seagull!

    But Feathers did not know
That he was not a duck at all
He thought that he just needed practice
As everyone around him, told him so

    “You’re not trying hard enough!”
“You need to put more effort in!”
“You’re just not doing it right”
    Said other ducks from Ducktopia

So every day he wouldn’t play
Like all the other ducks would do…
Instead he would practice his quacking
Only to find his sounded more like Ccaaawwww

Feathers use to get so sad
He couldn’t figure out what was wrong
Why could he not do, what all the other ducks could do?
It just made no sense at all

    That was until one day
When Feathers decided that he would play
That he found he enjoyed other things
That the ducks thought were not so great!

    Feathers enjoyed flying high,
    Diving from the sky,
Into the water and making a splash!
And standing on the highest place to dry!

Which the other ducks shook there heads at
    Giving him funny looks
They told him his fun was terrible
And this is not how ducks were suppose to act.

    Feathers thought about these words,
And it was then, he finally noticed
As he looked at his reflection in the water
He did not look like any of the ducks
    That lived in Ducktopia…

    And all at once
    Things made sense
    He could finally stop trying…
To be the duck that he was told he should be

Because he knew now that he wasn’t one…
    But most of all
    He decided
He didn’t want to be one either…

    This realization made him happy,
The happiest he had ever been
And the next time the ducks told him he was wrong
This is what he said to them.

“No I am not like you,
    Not like you at all!
    I am like me,
    And me is great
    I am happy this way
    Just being myself”

    And from that day
    Feathers didn’t try to change,
As he had done his whole life before today!
He no longer lived in yesterday,
Unsure of what he was, but happy anyway!

    He even pondered leaving Ducktopia
    To adventure far away
And maybe he would find others like him…
But that’s a story for another day.

Like this Matty….. we all feel different at times but we are not so much different as unique 🙂
    Thank you for sharing

  • I’m so happy that Feathers finally realised that he didn’t have to be like the others and had his own unique talents that made him special. The best gift you can give yourself is to be happy with who you are instead of trying to please others. You have a real talent with storytelling.
