Did I tell you I had a poem published in December 2011?

  • Did I tell you all that I had a poem published on page 9 of the CCS Disability Action Widening Horizons Magazine, December 2011 issue? I think I forgot to.

I receive support from CCS Disability Action and not to long ago last year, I was asked by someone at CCS if I had a poem about being different, what I deserve… and about what I find difficult. Well not just a poem, but a message… about what I need in order to exist and live in society. Instead of giving them just another poem I had written, I decided to sit down and write something specially for them. My friend says that means putting your soul in it (But I don’t really understand what that means)

Thank you CCS Disability Action for supporting my writing and work and giving me the opportunity to speak in your magazine.

    This is what I wrote.

PS: Ignore the “His” in the bio 🙂

If that’s to hard to read, it says.

    My name is Matty
    I am 22 years old
    I have ASD
    That’s Autism Spectrum Disorder

    I have sensory issues
    Also some physical disabilities
    Sometimes my hands don’t listen
And other days I am extremely tired

I know at times I can be slow
    Need things a certain way
    That sometimes people confuse me
And that at times I can be a pain.

I know all these things make me different.
but despite them I’m still human
I have rights and a voice
I deserve better than an institution.

    I deserve like everyone else,
To live in the community I choose to
In the world that I find beautiful
And the world I love so dearly.

    I deserve to live in a house…
No I deserve to live in a home!
    An environment of my own
A place that I can choose to leave if I wish to

I deserve do not be isolated
All alone and in the dark
I should not be locked away
    Forgotten and neglected

But most of all what I deserve
Is to live in dignity and safety without abuse…
Not just by people, but also government policies
And given the support I need to do so.

    I deserve all of these
Because with them comes a quality of life
And with this life I can contribute to society
Helping to teach people about tolerance.
