Why can’t I like blocks?

  • NB: If there is one thing I hate more than mean people, its people who don’t try to understand me… or people who do not even try. Here is a poem about something that happened after I built a really cool castle out of blocks a few days ago.

    Why can’t I like blocks?

I sit here in the sunlight
    Happy and excited
I am playing with my blocks
    Building a large castle.

I smile as I take my time
Making every color and shape fit,
    Nothing is out of place…
    It is perfect.

I am proud of my work,
    Admiring it from every angle
    Telling those I can
    About this marvellous creation!

    One of those I tell,
    Replied to me with this
“Don’t you think you are to old for that?”
    My heart sank so violently

I do not understand at all…
Why can I not like blocks and toys?
I have been told this before…
    About other things I enjoy.

    You see unlike other people
The things I like don’t tend to change…
    Maybe its an Autism thing?
Or maybe I was just made this way.

I still enjoy the things I did
From when I was so very small
Like the blocks I love to build with
    Or friendly hug-able soft-toys.

But as long as I enjoy what I’m doing
And no one is harmed or hurt at all
Why do people have have to be so negative
About the things that I like so much.

I guess that is something I will never understand
And to tell the truth… I’m not sure I really want to.
I think I will go back to looking with pride at my castle
And building things that I feel are perfect…

In a world of imperfection created by lack understanding.

I still like going for rides on a swing, and I could be considered too old for that :). If it’s something you enjoy doing (and it isn’t hurting anyone), you are never too old for anything, so continue to take pride in whatever you do, Matty.

  • I do lots of things that I’m too old to do, according to others, but it doesn’t stop me. I like buildiing with blocks, play in autumn leaves, going to children’s movies or skipping along the footpath. People may stare and can’t believe that it makes me happy. As long as it doesn’t hurt someone, I think you can do whatever makes you happy. Be proud of your blockbuilding prowess!!

I kind of live by this saying “I might be getting older but I will always be Immature”. I think age is irrelevant it’s just a number and we should embrace each day and enjoy the things we like doing. Regardless of what other people think.

  • I agree with Pip and Diane. Be proud of what makes you happy, don’t worry about what other people say. After all if they even knew you just a little bit they would understand why you like the things you do. And….building with blocks and lego is something that takes alot of creative thinking and creativity to be able to make amazingly beautiful things.

I like finger painting and playing in the mud and running outside when its raining. Lying on grass looking at the clouds and creating pictures out of them. And my bestest favouritest thing I like doing is lying outside at night time looking at the stars.

  • Hi Matty.
I wouldn’t feel sad about the comment the person made, I’d feel sad for them, that they have forgotten their inner child. I still do alot of things I enjoyed as a child.
Alot of parents like having children as they can play with their toys and have a good excuse to go see childrens movies. Growing up doesn’t have to mean you have to leave everything behind. If its not ilegal, and not harming anyone, I can’t see any reason not to enjoy the simple things in life, like sitting on the grass instead of on a seat etc.
